I don’t know how many of you stayed up past midnight last night – drinking coffee, eating too many Milanos – and all to enter a little contest called the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. But to those of you who did, who uploaded their magnum opus and pressed enter, I say mazel tov! Writing can be a lonely profession and there are often long breaks in between kudos. There’s no employee of the month, no MVP; heck, most of the time you don’t even get a certificate of participation. Or a nod from your boss – who is often you anyway. So, if you did enter the contest, do something nice for yourself today. Go to lunch with someone who thinks you’re just great, make a milkshake, dance around your kitchen to “Hot Pants.” And remember – if you don’t win, or if you don’t even place, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer (probably) or a bad person (unless you really are a bad person). It just means you’re going to have to start drinking again.
